the Database is going ONLINE!
Getting it online - fundraiser launched!

Dear friends,

Fred Schueler and Aleta Karstad here... We are excited to share that we have launched our fundraising campaign for getting the Fragile Inheritance Database online. As you may know, Fragile Inheritance is now incorporated as a non profit organization, and we are working with Blue Anchora to develop the user interface that will make over 156,700 (and counting) natural history records accessible to the public.

This will require a huge transformation in the way that we’ve built up Fred’s initial independent database structure over the decades. We will also coordinate with Darwin Core and iNaturalist, which have both come up since 2000 when Fred and Anita Miles were supported by the Eastern Ontario Model Forest to review the whole spectrum of natural history databases.

We are encouraged that among them all, our database is still the most flexible and acommodating for all kinds of records.

Dave Hooey of Blue Anchora has already uploaded all records to date, to a web-based platform. He is ready to design the user interface to make it accessible to researchers, institutional partners... and ultimately viewable in various ways by the general public.

We are starting to have students and other researchers using our long term data for their projects - and we will also be inviting naturalists and researchers to archive their data with us - which is an important mandate of Fragile Inheritance!

We are reaching out to you, our friends and supporters, to ask for your help in this project by means of donations to our campaign and/or by sharing within your networks. Our initial campaign goal of $10,000 will get the Fragile Inheritance Database operational online, and Blue Anchora is committed to ongoing development and maintenance, ensuring consistency as we go forward.

If you follow our Fragile Inheritance page on Facebook or subscribe to this newsletter, expect to see promotion and updates on the campaign over the coming weeks.

Rest assured that getting the Fragile Inheritance Database online will boost its current value exponentially - a model of flexibility, it will become a key Canadian resource to document relationships among species and the shifts in ecosystems due to climate change. We won't be able to do it without you !

Thank you, as always, for your support,

Fred Schueler and Aleta Karstad

BREAKING NEWS!  Over the past year, biology students have been analysing our historic data for honours projects and scientific publication... and just recently professors and students have expressed interest in developing research projects on Mudpuppies and Crayfish which would use data that we have been gathering for decades.
